Local AI, Sabah

Practical on-device AI that respects data, supports local languages, and grows with our communities.

BORNEO LAND GATEKEEPER AI LABS designs tools that run on-device, with privacy by design and offline capability. Built in Sabah, we work with local families, small businesses, and community groups to create practical AI that respects data sovereignty and remains under your control. Our projects—Sabah Voices, Pantai and Padi Community Recorder, and Borneo Market Link—embody a philosophy: technology should be useful and trustworthy, governed by local communities, and tuned to Sabah’s languages and everyday needs. Tools are downloadable, privacy-conscious, operate offline where possible, and invite local collaboration within an open ecosystem.

Tools and Services

We offer a suite of tools designed for Sabah that respect privacy, run on-device, and work offline where possible. Built with local-first thinking, these tools are freely shared with the Sabah community and beyond. The APK download is presented with a selectable SHA-256 hash to verify integrity, and we do not publish URLs to unreleased capabilities.

Sabah Voices: Local Language AI Assistant

Lightweight, offline-capable language understanding and voice interactions for Sabah languages. Runs on standard mobile devices, supports transliteration and language nuance, preserves privacy by default, and only shares data if the user opts in. Designed for everyday use without constant cloud connectivity; features run on-device inference.

Pantai & Padi Community Recorder

Participatory mapping and land-use data collection built with village committees and NGOs. Data sovereignty is central: information stays within user-defined boundaries unless explicitly shared, governance settings enable local oversight, and the tool remains usable offline or with low bandwidth.

Borneo Market Link

Privacy-conscious marketplace assistant for small producers and shopkeepers. Supports pricing, inventory, and customer inquiries with offline functionality and low-bandwidth communication. Local language support and data stays on-device unless the user chooses to share; avoids personal data harvesting.

Local-First, Privacy-Driven AI Tools

We design AI tools that respect privacy by design, run on-device, and evolve with Sabah communities. This section highlights the core approaches that keep technology grounded in daily life here.

Privacy by Design and On-Device Inference: We design systems to maximize data control and minimize data collection. Models operate primarily on the user’s device, with data staying local unless the user chooses to share. This supports offline use and works well in low-bandwidth contexts common in Sabah.

Local Language First and Offline Capability: Sabah languages are prioritized in our interfaces and models, including transliteration where needed. The tools are lightweight, run on modest devices, and function offline or with intermittent connectivity, keeping conversations private and local.

Open Source, Local Governance, and Data Sovereignty: We publish open components when possible and invite Sabahan developers, researchers, and students to contribute. Data sovereignty and governance reflect Sabah’s values, with clear opt-in controls and transparency about data flows.

Privacy, Locality, and Community in Practice

At the heart of BORNEO LAND GATEKEEPER AI LABS is a belief: technology should serve people, not extract their data. Our tools embody privacy by design, support Sabah’s languages, and enable local governance. By keeping computation on-device, prioritizing offline and low-bandwidth use, and inviting open collaboration, we create thoughtful, trustworthy AI that strengthens communities rather than distant, hype-driven promises.

Privacy by Design in Everyday Tools

Tools are built to protect your data from the start. On-device processing keeps information on your device, and data sharing is optional and user-controlled. Local governance ensures privacy decisions reflect Sabah values and stay with the community.

Local Language Support and Accessibility

We design language models and interfaces for Sabah’s linguistic landscape, prioritizing offline and low-bandwidth operation. This ensures elders, youth, and everyone in between can use technology in their own language and on their terms.

Open Collaboration and Local Governance

Where possible, we publish open components and invite Sabah developers, researchers, and students to contribute. Transparent governance mechanisms keep decisions close to the people they affect and aligned with local values.

Process: Local-first, privacy-respecting journey

Our process begins with listening to Sabah communities and translating what we hear into concrete, privacy-conscious design. Each step centers the land, the people, and the belief that technology should serve daily life without compromising personal control. We move from idea to impact through iterative, collaborative work that respects local values and ecosystems.

01

Discovery with communities

We listen to neighbors, small businesses, and community groups to understand needs and privacy expectations. We co-create problem statements with Sabah partners to reflect local realities and values.

02

Architecture and privacy baseline

We map data flows, set privacy guardrails, and design for on-device processing wherever possible to maximize user control and minimize data leaving the device.

03

Concept and UX design

We translate needs into approachable interfaces that work on real devices and networks, with a focus on accessibility, local languages, and cultural context.

04

Prototyping and testing

Lean prototypes are built and tested with end users in local settings. We learn from feedback with humility and adapt to constraints like limited bandwidth and shared devices.

"Tools run on-device, offline when needed, and I decide what data to share, perfect for Sabah communities."
